XP Pro SR2 et al, was re-installed (clean install) with MS Tech help. I was
left with several important components missing. Now the video driver is missing, too. Why does this happen? And, how does one find these things w/o getting other companies to help out? Sheesh, this has been a nightmare. thank you. |

Your hardware drivers are *not* necessarily supplied by Microsoft. In fact - as more and more time passes between the initial release of Windows XP and the current date - less and less hardware you are likely to have will have a 'working' driver included in the installation and more will have to be obtained from the manufacturer of the product in question. The correct hardware drivers for your system is something *you* will have to figure out or someone you trust (and/or pay) will have to figure out for you. If you had come here to get help with a clean install of the OS on a working PC - I would have given you this advice: Download and install Belarc Advisor onto the current Windows XP machine. Use it to get a list of hardware from the machine as well as the CD Key used to install it. You will need this later to download/install the proper hardware drivers. At this point - you are going to have to rely on invoices and/or your eyes and information gathering skills. If you have a detailed invoice - you are in luck. It should list what type of video card you have - perhaps a motherboard name, possibly a Network Card name, etc... If it is a Dell/HP/IBM/etc - you could be in luck - as you can visit the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) web page - enter a bit of information and download the correct drivers for your system. Otherwise - you will have to open it up and see what's inside and identify it anyway you can. Come back after that - let us know what you need more help with. The more information you volunteer about the system - the more help you can get. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Sheesh, this has been a > nightmare. thank you. > There is a very simple explanation: Your video card and its driver was released ***after*** WinXP was released, hence MS could not possibly have included the driver on its own CD. The driver is, in fact, included with the CD that you received when you bought your PC. In answer to your second question: You either take your PC to a service centre or you ask a computer-literate friend to assist you. It's the same with your car - very few people would have the knowledge and the tools to repair an automatic gearbox. |

The others have explained why. You might look up a Computer User Group in
your area and see if they have knowledgible volunteers to give you a hand. http://www.apcug.net/ "Laughingstar~*" <le_sentier_battunospam368@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:OXuScs43HHA.2312@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > XP Pro SR2 et al, was re-installed (clean install) with MS Tech help. Because you performed a clean installation. Naturally you'll need to reinstall the manufacturers' device drivers for the computer's various components. > And, how does one find these things w/o > getting other companies to help out? Reading Windows Help Files is one place to start. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. -Bertrand Russell |

In the future, keep a copy of your video drivers on a CD somewhere. -- http://www.bootdisk.com/ |
