Default Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, MyComputer, Control Panel

Real headache over the weekend.. Could some one be of an assistance please.

Had hardware failure - memory related over the weekend - recovered in the
end as I took out one of the memory sets and ran on just the one whilst
waiting for the part.

Whilst doing that , Dell recommended installing this KB microsoft fix
through their automated PC check up utility.

Once done, none of Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, MyCOmputer or
Control Panel worked. Also the Microsoft Update stopped working.

Tried to XP Repair but no good. Uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled. No good..

Disabled Norton Anti Virus software services no joy.

Started in Safe Mode with Networking - Works fine !!!

Wat tha ?? I can not get at the KB fix name as CONTROl PANEl does not work
any more.

When I double on any of the utilities mentioned , The screen just refreshes
the icons and task tray and zilch ...

So, how did you uninstall IE7 then if you cannot get to control Panel
without any command from the run command on CMD command prompt?.
Does this happen in logged in Safe Mode?, try and see if you can access the
Control panel.
Why you didn't Restore to an earlier date before the Update took place?.
Here a similar scenario like yours, see if it will help you, also read the
command to access the control panel, the Internet options and so on..

Cheers for nass .. I will try that article ..
I uninstalled through safe mode .. everything works in SAFE Mode

Normal mode commands for the said missing functionality do not work either.

Completely forgot the fact that I had a restore point to get back to..

I will have a look at the article and update you .

So that confirm the theory that there is something in Normal Mode lurking
and causing this to happen (something not pleasant/good).
Try to perform a clean Boot in normal mode and see what app/program causing
this and uninstall it or see if it is Legitimate.
How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
Good luck.
Keep us informed with your progress.

256. Restore the Control Panel - Disable : Current , Local, Both
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Did you checked in Device manager for any malfunctioning Devices or conflict?.
Test your Ram from here:
Download this tool and unzip it and make a floppy or CD/DVD and run it on
Reboot.
http://www.memtest86.com/
You may need to reposition/reset the RAM sticks in their slots.
Or Repair/Install for Windows:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Note if you have IE you need to uninstall it before performing a
Repair/install for XP OS.
Did you tried the Clean boot?.
HTH.
