I plug a USB hard drive into my computer (running Windows XP) while
I'm logged in under an Administrative account and don't have any problems what-so-ever. I then switch to a Limited account and I can't see the drive in My Computer. If I type in the letter name in the Address bar I get the following message: Cannot find file 'file:///x:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct. I into cmd.exe, type in x: and... that works. I can see the drive and its contents just fine. If I go to the Open File or Save File dialog of any program, I can see the drive there, as well. I just can't access it from My Computer. Any ideas as to what's wrong? This doesn't happen all the time but it does happen enough to motivate me to post this. Thanks! |

Select the drive management. You should be able to see the drive with any allocated drive letter. If there is no drive letter shown, right click on the box representing the drive and select 'Change drive letter'. Select the letter of your desire and OK your way out. |

I don't have permission to log into the Disk Management took with a Limited account. I was able to click on Disk Defragmenter and although everything was grayed out, I did see the new drive - the x: drive. Besides, how could that be the problem if I'm able to access the drive via its drive letter in the Save As / Open dialog boxes or in cmd.exe? |

Of course you can't access the management tool from a limited account. I should have spotted that before I posted. As to why you can't see it in 'My Computer'? I'm stumped. |
