ps. . the open/close button on the pc works fine

As far as I know, this option has never been there.

On all my systems (Windows 98, 2000, XP) it isn't
there.

on my Sony Vaio, Windows XP home, it was. .when i clicked on the drive, got
the dropdown window and one selection was ""eject". . once it opened the
drop down disappeared and when i clicked on it again (while the drawer was
open, the "eject" option had turned to "load". .

Then it must have been a function of whatever software the Vaio had come
with...
so look into that . It is not a function of Windows to have such an option
