Security Center icon missing from Control Panel after Malware Atta

Our laptop became infected with the XP Antispyware 2009 malware. It turned
off our security center and Kasparsky Anitivirus.

We were able to remove the malware and clean the system but now the Security
Center Icon is missing from the control panel. Under "services" it shows that
Security Center is running "automatically" but I have no way to access the
program without the icon (that I know of).

OS:
Windows XP Home Service Pack 3

Thanks for any help in restoring the icon. If I can't get this corrected, my
only tought was to reinstall Service Pack 2 (have a disk which includes
Windows Security Center) then run the windows updater and update it back to
Service Pack 3.

Do a search of the hard drive for wscui.cpl. There is most likely
another one in the ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. Copy it from there to
c:\windows\system32.

Try this Registry Fix:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...terrestore.reg

Open the Registry Edfitor and see these Keys:

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer =
"Restrictions"=dword:00000000

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Control
Panel = "SecurityTab"=dword:00000000

First off, the following procedure will launch Windows Security Center.

Start -> Run -> wscui.cpl

One workaround to your current problem would be to go to
C:\Windows\System32, right click on wscui.cpl, and select Send to -> Desktop
(create shortcut). This would at least give you a way of launching Security
Center should you not be able to restore the Control Panel icon.

As for the missing icon in Control Panel, run the Registry Editor (Start ->
Run -> regedit.exe) and navigate to the following registry key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Control
Panel\don't load

Take a look in the right hand pane for an entry containing mscui.cpl. If
found, right click on it and delete it.

Good luck

RE: Security Center icon missing from Control Panel after Malware

Ran the program from Kelly's Korner. Didn't work.
Looked for those registry key, they are not in the registry.

I'm at a loss.

Re: Security Center icon missing from Control Panel after Malware

We were able to open the Security Center via the Start/Run. Thanks. That
verifies that it is still in my system.

I'll add a start from System32 to the desktop for now.

As for the registry key, we could not find it. Used the FIND feature too
and nothing.
