Default Installing SP3 via Automatic Updates

I have automatic updates set to Automatically download recommended updates
for my computer and install them at 20:00.

I left my pc on all night and it is still on SP3.

Will SP3 not install via automatic updates?

Thanks

It will but it's not a good idea to let it being as you have to disable
all anti virus and anti malware apps first and you need to reboot TWICE
after it's installed. If you have a third party firewall, you need to
make sure it's disabled and doesn't boot with Windows and use the XP
firewall during the SP3 install.

It would be better for you to download it and install it manually *after*
doing proper prep work.

[Crossposted to Windows Update newsgroup]

Did you just enable Automatic Updates? Did you just reinstall WinXP and are
you running WinXP SP2?

Keep reading:

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

3a. Check your WindowsUpdate.log (%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

=> How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1122
and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support
link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

=> NB: If WindowsUpdate.log shows "Update is not allowed to download due to
regulation" errors, you'll just have to wait a while longer until the
servers aren't so busy. You may want to configure Automatic Updates to the
"Download but Notify" or "Notify Only" setting so you can keep better track
of the progress; see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Hi, you say it will but it hasn't yet (and SP3 has been out a while), is this
because I have McAfee Antivirus running?

Basically I don't want it to install automatically anyway so I think I will
have to apply the SP3 blocker tool to stop it.

Thanks

See my reply to your post.

If you configure Automatic Updates to the "Notify Only" setting, you can
decline the download of the WinXP SP3 installer.

Note that WinXP SP3 must be installed by April 2010 or the machine will not
be offered any more critical security updates.
