Hello Stan,
Forget this Registry cleaner software. If you have errors post the errors to newsgroup and find solutions. Reg cleaners will do what the programmers told them, NOT what the real MS programmers would do. They destroy more, that they can help you. The registry is stable and normally running properly even if you install/deinstall a lot of software. And if you still will use do NOT blame MS for the problems you got!!! The fact that there are some blatant falsehoods within the blurb recommending the product makes me even more suspicious. I'd have to say, given the contents of the recommendation, that Glary Registry Repair is just another snake oil scam, like all other purported registry "cleaners." -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot |

Stan;
Continue to be leery, most registry tools are no better than snake oil. Registry tools have the potential to damage Windows and seldom yield any significant benefit. If you must use them, be sure you are very familiar with the tool including the tools feature that returns back to original. If the tool does not have such a feature, that should be seen as a large red flag. Do not delete/change any key unless you know exactly what affect that change will make. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Stan" <libstan@bellsouth.net> wrote in message news:%23JpRilkHIHA.1316@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... That said: The expert's advice should be taken *without* a single grain of salt - you DO NOT want to live through a "hosed registry". Does that mean you should not use the registry cleaner part of the program? Not necessarily. But you have to use it with self discipline. If you run the "Registry Cleaner" part of the program, you MUST look at every entry it wants to "clean". The first time you do this, it is a list that may take you an hour to go through. READ THEM ALL. If you do not understand exactly what any proposed removal is, UNCHECK IT. If you are not comfortably computer literate as to what all the proposed eliminations are, this might sound like more trouble than it's worth. That's the point. Glary keeps backups of everything it does for as long as you want, so it does have a "fail-safe" option (in theory), and many other aspects of the program are wonderful. But don't use it the first time until you FULLY UNDERSTAND what you are doing with each aspect of the program. And again - if that sounds like it's a little beyond you, that's the point. I love the Glary Utilites. But I'll be the first person to tell you, if there is any aspect of them that is "a little beyond you" at this point, DON'T USE THAT PART OF THE PROGRAM. That goes especially for the Registry Cleaner. Good luck - and as Sgt. Phil Esterhsaus used to say on Hill Street Blues: "Let's be careful out there!" Tony |

Let's not get TOO cynical. I have never seen a Glary ad in "PC Magazine", and rather doubt a company would provide payola to publicize a free app. I think this was just a case of a writer needing to produce a piece, so he installed some software on a test PC, played with it a while, & wrote it up. |

Tony,
What you say is very enlightening and obviously you know what you are doing with the software. Sadly, I am not that well versed in computerese so after reading yours and all the other comments, I think it would be in my best interests not to use this or any other program that invades the registry. They may help one who understands the inner workings of a computer but unfortunately that's not me. Better to be safe than sorry and if and when I develop problems I will deal with the experts that know what they're doing. Again, Many Thanks to all who sent in their comments and advice. I greatly appreciate their input. This is a great forum.
