I am planning to use a "scrubber" program called CCleaner (freeware), which removes duplicate files. I have two system files that are duplicated in 3 or 4 different locations, namely:
Ntldr in C:\ (233,632 bytes) Ntldr in C:\I386 (233,632 bytes) Ntldr in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 (250,032 bytes) Hal.dll in C:\I386 (version 5.1.2600.1106) Hal.dll in C:\Windows\System32 (v. 5.1.2600.2562) Hal.dll in C:\Windows|DriverCache\i386 (v. 5.1.2600.2562) Hal.dll in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 (v. 5.1.2600.2180) Question: which locations does Windows use to load these 2 system files from? I assume it's C:\ for Ntldr, and C:\Windows\System32 for Hal.dll, but would like to confirm with someone more knowledgeable than I. Note also the difference in bytes count for Ntldr. Thanks, George |

You are only asking for trouble if you move or delete the duplicate system files, are you really that low on disk space that you must delete a couple of tiny little files? John |

i don't think ccleaner
can be referred to as a scrubber. also, i don't think it is designed to remove duplicate files. however, it will take out the trash that is stored on the disk with ease. -- db ·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·..><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º>¸. ><)))º>·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·.. ><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º> .. Deleting multiple copies of system files is equivalent to
throwing out last year's taxation papers because you're running out of space in your house. There are several more effective and less dangerous methods to remove the clutter from your hard disk. There seems to be unanimous agreement to leave those files alone, so I will.
Thanks for your input, John, DB, and Pegasus. your welcome.
windows has many safeguards and the time will come when those seemingly superfluous files will be needed by windows. -- db ·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·..><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º>¸. ><)))º>·´¯`·.¸. , . .·´¯`·.. ><)))º>`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸.·´¯`·...¸><)))º> ..
