If this is in the wrong forum, feel free to move it. Anyways, I've been noticing that my computer has been installing updates without my consent. Originally, I had set it to install updates automatically, and it did that for awhile. But here recently, it's been installing updates almost every time I come on the internet. I tried changing the update settings to "Download updates, but let me choose whether to install them" and the two other options (check updates and allow me to install, and never download updates) and it still didn't work. Now, every time I get on the computer, I have to wait almost an hour for the updates to configure, even when I didn't give them the go ahead to install! Is anyone having this problem? And if so, is there some sort of patch that can cure it? Here's what my computer says I need to download: > Microsoft Silverlight 1.0 (KB955305) > > Download size: 1.4 MB > > Update type: Optional > Security Update for Windows Vista (KB938464) > > Download size: 1.2 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Security Update for Windows Vista (KB954154) > > Download size: 173 KB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - September 2008 (KB890830) > > Download size: 671 KB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > > Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [September 2008] (KB905866) > > Download size: 2.1 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Recommended > Update for Windows Vista (KB954366) > > Download size: 3.3 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Recommended > Marvell - Network - Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet > Controller > > Download size: 194 KB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Optional > Security Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB956483) > > Download size: 3.4 MB > > Update type: Important > Security Update for Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 (KB950130) > > Download size: 3.9 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB951944) > > Download size: 7.8 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB954326) > > Download size: 1.5 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB956080) > > Download size: 3.3 MB > > You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect. > > Update type: Important > Thanks in advance for any advice. -- spiffster ------------------------------------------------------------------------ spiffster's Profile: http://winvistaclub.com/forum/member.php?userid=574 View this thread: http://winvistaclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23769 |

I have found that it is advantageous to have the updates automatically
download and Install, at 3:00 a.m. It works! To me the words "Security" and "Important" indicates that you may be open to some malicious software. Don't depend on your Anti-virus program to protect from this. Your consent? It seems that you can't tell which ones are valid, so why not just install them? Next double click each one in turn to install, when finished, reboot and all should be fine. It was for me anyway Gandalff |

I forgot to mention that almost every single time after it has finished "configuring" the updates, System Recovery boots and it says my computer cannot start, most likely because of the updates being installed. I have tried installing the updates manually, and this still happens. In addition, Firefox, my main browser, always claims that it encountered an error when I go to open the browser and if I want to resume my previous session or start a new one, when there was no issues when I was signing off. I've run spyware checks, virus checks to no avail. I'm contemplating reformatting the entire computer. -- spiffster ------------------------------------------------------------------------ spiffster's Profile: http://winvistaclub.com/forum/member.php?userid=574 View this thread: http://winvistaclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23769 |
