I called microsoft yesterday asking what will be done via this problem for
those who cannot get updated drivers for the Sigma Tel audio driver. The problem is Sigma no longer makes audio drivers and passed it off to another company who told me they are not making updated drivers at all for this type of audio codec. So how do you get updated drivers if you cannot? I have been on many forums via Dell and Gateway and thousand of customers have the same problem. First microsoft was giving advise to uninstall the driver and allow Vista to find its own drivers for this. Many did this and found they still had no sound. Microsoft also said to uninstall drivers, put sp1 on and then reput back the driver for sigman tel. Many who did this found after the sp1 install, when trying to put back the driver, Vista now came back with an error msg saying "This driver is not compatable for Vista" so they wound up again with no sound. Well after talking to the tech and he confirmed that this is what was being said- now when people call in they are telling them not do do anything and wait because microsoft is working on a solution to this. They say it will show up in Windows Update either a patch or fix for this problem. I received this morning an email from microsoft that I am passing in here, some of the info like email or confirmation number has been taken out just for security. see below this will confirm what microsoft told me, I received an email today This is Smitha Nair with Microsoft Windows Technical Support. I am following up regarding your Windows service request . Here is an outline of the steps that we agreed upon during our call: Problem Description: Needs information on installing service pack 1 on a computer with sigmatel audio drivers. Troubleshooting Performed: We did not perform any troubleshooting onthe computer. Action Plan: Kindly wait for further updates from microsoft which addresses the sigma audio driver compatibilty issues with service pack1. My goal is to ensure that your experience with Microsoft Windows Technical Support leaves you pleased with our products and services. If you have any feedback regarding Microsoft support, we would be glad to hear from you. If you would feel more comfortable speaking with someone else regarding my service, Sumit , my manager, would be very happy to hear your comments and suggestions. |

I have the same issue with my Gateway and was also told that they (GW) was working on it without an ETA Sigmatel was apparently acquired by IDT and they are doing nada about it. I am glad MS is working on it, if not I will just get a new sound card and switch Bill |

The onboard audio for my Intel motherboard originally used Sigma Tel
drivers. One month ago, they were replaced with IDT drivers on Intel's web page for downloads for my mobo. So, you may want to look for new drivers specifically for your mobo, rather than for your make and model of computer. robinb wrote: > I called microsoft yesterday asking what will be done via this problem for > those who cannot get updated drivers for the Sigma Tel audio driver. I have a GW 5478 with an Intel G33 MoBo. I have been using Vista (using
Ultimate) SP1 for > 2 months with no trouble at all using GW SigmaTel sound drivers. After the "official SP1" was released I decided to do a clean install of Vista/Ult and again used the supplied GW SigmaTel sound drivers with no difficulties. In fact, I have a set of older Creative 5.1 speakers that I used with my old computer and got these speakers to work with the supplied drivers also. I can even go further. I was playing around and did a clean install of XP Pro (of course I have a mirror image of my Vista Ult) but could get no sound at all from the SigmaTel drivers....So I went to the Intel site and read some info on G33 MoBo and I found 3 iterations of that MoBo so I stalled - just as a guess - another sound driver from SigmaTel for a similar board and that driver gave me sound (again 5.1). the average person has no idea how to do this
that is why microsoft should fix this problem because these drivers do work with Vista just not with sp1 robin "jimrx4" <jimrx4@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:0D0E3E40-DA9D-459F-8933-AEA820B29187@microsoft.com... >I have a GW 5478 with an Intel G33 MoBo. I'm not saying what I did "to be in your face." I think I am no more than
an "average user." My point is, spend a little time, do some reading and/or searching and I think most of the answers are out there. Thank God for newsgroups. Many contributors have walked me through numerous problems.
