Hi, back again to pick some brains. Probably should have put this under
Networking. Trying to help Elyson on Techguy.org forums. This is his problem. No names in cache error message Hi all, I have a home networking problem with a Laptop that's running Vista Home Premium, a Win XP desktop and a Win98SE desktop. The Laptop is connected wirelessly and the Win98SE and Win XP computers are connected to a Dynalink Wireless 4-port Modem/Router via ethernet cables All computers can gain access to the Internet ok and can all ping each other's IP addresses (including the Win98SE). The Laptop can ping the Win XP by name and vice versa, but they cannot ping the Win98SE by name. The Win98SE can ping itself by name though. Have done a nbtstat -n on the Win98SE and keep getting the error message "No names in cache". Have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all machines. I cannot share folders or drives on the Win98SE computer as there is no "Sharing" option either in Windows Explorer - Edit or when i right-click on Network Neighborhood. I have posted this networking problem under "Networking" and members have provided great support with giving me heaps of things to try but nothing seems to be working. Have posted this time under Operating Systems hoping that someone with Win98SE might have experienced the same problem, or know what the problem is, or had a similar problem. Tried 100 different things and don't know what to try next. Desperate times call for desperate measures but I don't want to reformat the Win98SE, I just want to get on the network with it. Hoping someone can help me. Had him check his Internet Connection and Network settings with mine. All were the same except under TCP/IP, Advanced he had "use this protocol as default protocol" checked. Don't think that has any bearing on problem, but told him to try with it unchecked. Have done a lot of googling and this is my understanding of the problem. For "ping by name", computer1 sends a general broadcast for a computer with the "name" in its Netbios chache to respond. For "File and Printer sharing" computer1 when asked to share checks Netbios cache of computer2 asking for "names" to check against its allowed list. If there are no names or wrong names in the Netbios cache on computer2 nothing happens. My questions that I haven't be able to find answers for yet. How do the computer and workgroup names get put into the Netbios cache? If Netbios is bad how do you repair/replace it? Any answers/ideas are greatly appreciated How do names get put into the Netbios cache |

MEB, thanks for come back.
Elyon (misspelled his name) originally posted in TG's Network thread. ..http://forums.techguy.org/networking...ighlight=Elyon After 120 posts and no solution , he posted in their 95/98/ME thread, where I picked it up. The only problem anyone has been able to find is with Netbios cache on the 98SE. Runnig nbtstst -n on the 98SE machines shows no names in cache. This is what I get with nbtstat -n on my Vista and get similar on my 98SE and ME. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. No names, no sharing. Assuming his Netbios has been corrupted is there some way to fix it. |

ICS has its own DHCP, look at the registry for its entry. It WILL conflict with any router assigned IP [uses same address as router generally]. Did you look a master browser issues? ** How about HOSTS or LMHOST files involved anywhere? IF you actually have made sure to check ALL potential blocks like firewalls and such, IF and only IF, then: Have him completely remove ALL networking components in Control Panel > Network and re-install if this hasn't already been tried. 1. That includes FIRST disabling File and Printer Sharing, shut down, then removal of ALL aspects. 2. Shutdown several times afterwards then - 3. Re-install all network adapters, make sure that all proper entries are found in NETWORK, re-enable File and Printer Sharing. 4. Restart [after a complete power-off] all aspects of the network, starting with the router, then its controller, then the lesser nodes. 5. Check IP configs for ALL adapters. Make sure if dynamic assigned, that it is configured with the proper settings; if hard set make sure that it is in the proper range AND workgroup AND sub-net.. though it appears from the posts his router IS assigning addresses or at least attempting to. Typically for newsgroups, I see a number of potential issues do to questions not answered or followed up on. It happens, so don't feel bad. Run through that networking page I linked for ICS and other issues [try search/find on this page in your browser]. Good luck. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org a Peoples' counsel _ _ ~~ |

I've browsed that thread and one thing stands out for me, and that is a Node Type of "Hybrid" in the response to the WINIPCFG command. Host Name . . . . . . . . . : ACEROLD DNS Servers . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 Node Type . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid Mine responds with "Broadcast". I'm relatively clueless when it comes to networking, though, so I don't know what this means, or whether it is significant. I found this MS support document: Default Node Type for Microsoft Clients: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/160177 ================================================== ================== Windows 95 NodeType Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\MSTCP Value type: DWORD Valid range: 1, 2, 4, or 8 Default: 1 (b-node) if no value is specified or no WINS servers are configured on the network; 8 (h-node) if WINS servers are specified and NodeType is not otherwise defined in the Registry. Description: This parameter specifies the mode of NetBIOS name resolution used by NetBIOS over TCP/IP. 1 = b-node (broadcasts), 2 = p-node (point-to-point name queries to a WINS server), 4 = m-node (broadcast then query name server), and 8 = h-node (query name server, then broadcast). If DNS is enabled (which also enabled LMHOSTS in Windows 95), name resolution will also follow the mode defined by this parameter. This value can also be configured using DHCP. ================================================== ================== One other thing I've found is that the LMHOSTS file can be used to resolve NetBIOS names for small networks. Maybe you could rename it (instead of deleting it), just in case it contains some inappropriate configuration entries. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

Frank, thanks for come back.
Not that much into network knowledge myself, but am learning a lot. Don't think hybrid node is a problem. Hybrid (8) checks for server name and if cannot find a server uses broadcast. Since there is no server he is using braodcast. Will see if he would change though. Eliminate one variable. The "no names in (Netbios) cache" is probaly the biggest problem. From what I have been able to find by searching, with Netbios over TCP/IP those names are how other computers know you are part of the LAN (workgroup name) and autorized to share (computer name).
