I seriously doubt it. In fact, I'd be surprised if they're opened by
anything by default.

No. They should have NO association. In regedit, find HKEY_Classes_Root\.tmp
(not the leading period)and delete it.

That is what I like about 98 Second Edition, Bill in Co. --- users do it
themselves and can destroy themselves and the os in the process if they are
too dumb or not careful enough. I also like Gary's attitude towards TweakUI
that he does not use it because he does it all manually himself from another
98 general posting. This is the best way to be, I feel but I know that I am
not at that level of expertise yet. I still do not have the Windows 98
Scripting Host installed. I do not want scripts automatically written that
could destroy my 98 Second Edition. <grin>

In addition, I have now turned off automatic updates within XP Professional
Service Pack 3, I know about patch Tuesday the second Tuesday of every month
and I check at other times as well just to be safe. The question I am always
asking myself of XP Updates is will this break XP, will this fully trash my
os, what will this update break if anything, etc.

I found the file. The string value is temp_auto_file. Does this get deleted
as well?

That is what I found in File Types and I never assigned a default program to
open .tmp files.

The "open" default program on my system is C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE
"%1"

Why would you like an OS "where users do it themselves and can destroy
themselves and the os in the process if they are too dumb or not careful
enough"? It seems that an OS where the neophtye is locked out of making
system changes would be preferable.

Nor should you. (How it got assigned is beyond me)
I just view .tmp files (if desired) in Quick View Plus. Or occasionally
I'll send them to Notepad or Wordpad to take a peek.

I don't think thats the normal default, and I think Gary mentioned the same.
I still think the default was (supposed to be) "no association", and that
maybe you changed it inadvertently. (I guess it doesn't hurt to leave
it, but why?)
