I like 98SE because I am a fairly good computer user and I see computers as
powerful machines and not toys. I want to be in charge of my machine and I
do not want someone in charge of me while I am connected to a domain and the
case of the hacking in May-October 2007 of the Albuquerque Public School
Network in Albuquerque, New Mexico destroyed XP SP2 fully updated because the
NT source code is not there because it lacks the maintenance operating system
and focuses on external security and not internal safety. In addition, XP
has remote access built in so that anyone with the right hardware, software
and skills can crack without too much trouble if the computer is not properly
configured, updated and protected by the user. This should not have to
always be farmed out to IT thus the importance of general licensing for all
computer users in my opinion. The neophtye that sees a computer as a toy can
just go ahead with Apple for all I care and enjoy them apples until it breaks
or is compromised and then breaks. <grin>

Not necessarily PCR, just because you have it doesn't mean Daffy's
gots the same disease. But you are 100% right when you said that you
probably set that association yourself - which is my whole point to
this post.

All such "_auto_" entries in the registry were put there manually by
the nut behind the steering wheel so to speak. It gets done that way
when you use the Open With gizmo and check the "use this program
always" box. It's also the same way in which Windows can be tweaked
to provid for custom programs that need their associations to fire up
first. Apparently the underline character is first in line ahead of a
standard alpha character such that "jpg_auto_file" gets acted upon
before the standard "jpgfile" does just for an example. Yet the
original entry remains intact in the registry and a bit good
housecleaning can get one back to where things once were without too
much heartache. It's a pretty good system considering, except when
DaffyD forgets that he is the one that did it to himself - somehow.

Yea, likely I did that. It messes nothing up in/of itself (I don't
think), but only determines what will open a .tmp file when one clicks
it oneself. Applications other than Notepad/Wordpad STILL will function
fine when they need to access that file type. HOWEVER, one NEVER should
SAVE the opened file-- that COULD mess the file up if it is other than
plain & unformatted text! Wordpad & some Notepad substitutes may put
formatting characters into the saved file!

If you use the Folder Options, File Types, Edit, requestor(s) to change
applications to perform the Actions-- it only will change what happens
when one clicks a file of that file type or extension. Also, it can
change what will happen when one R-Clks that file type & selects one one
of those options, if there are Actions for that. That's what I call a
complex one-- one that has multiple R-Clk possibilities like Print &
Edit.

I don't think the complex ones are a good candidate to use that "Always
use this program to open this type of file" option of "Open with..." on.
However, maybe it won't upset the other actions (I don't really know).
You can get "Open with..." back, you know, by holding shift while
R-Clking a file of a type that already has been set once. The other
thing I worry about is that "Always use..." wouldn't get the switches
right if it is other than "%1", like in...
c:\windows\NOTEPAD.EXE "%1"

..JPG, .JPEG, .JPE, .JFIF seems to be complex in a different way(s)-- it
makes use of DDE, it has multiple file types, & it has TWO registered
file types in Folder Options, File Types tab. They both are named JPEG
Image-- none of the two is named JPG File.

If one did an "Open with..." on one of those file types, one would get,
for instance, a "JPG File" listed in "Registered file types" window.
Probably that would give both keys...

HKEY_Classes_Root\.JPG
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JPG_auto_file

....& removing "JPG File" would likely get rid of just those keys & leave
the "JPEG Image" keys intact. I'm not overly worried about that!

I might have changed it but I can't remember doing this recently and this is
something that I've just noticed. I know that it really isn't a big deal but
when I see a change like this I like to put things back to default.
